Shopping online? Here's some tips to protect yourself while on the Internet

October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month, but there are tips on how you can keep your online accounts safe year-round. "You have to be very careful when you go online. Where you share this information, who you're sharing this information with," says Francisco Salinas, chair of South Texas College's Cybersecurity Department. That may not be their first thought when they go on the internet. "Especially if you're shopping online, it's also important that you don't go to any shady sites - sites you don't know," Salinas said. Keeping online accounts safe is simple to do with the right tools and it starts with a strong password- adding a capital letter, a lowercase letter, numbers, and a special character, like a pound sign or an exclamation point is one of the many ways to keep unwanted people out. Experts say that avoiding suspicious links in emails from people you don't know, changing your password regularly, and making sure your computer software is up to date will keep personal information from getting into the wrong hands. Make sure that the website you're visiting starts with "Https" is essential as well because those sites make sure no one else can see your information, like your credit card or social security number. read more...
